The Manchester Mega Mela is the largest celebration of South Asian culture in the North of England. First started in 1989, it has now become an established annual event and attracts huge audiences in the region of 60 000.
Around 70% of attendees are from the South Asian community but it offers a great family day out regardless of culture or religion. There are attractions for all age groups including dance, traditional arts, music, ceramics, jewellery, archeology, shopping and a fabulous selection of food.
St James' Safe Deposit took a stand at the Mela this year and were delighted with the interest which they generated amongst the audience. We managed to give away over 1000 balloons and our gold bars and jewellery (all fake!) provoked much attention. We ran a Mega Mela promotion offering attendees £20 off their first year's rental of a safe deposit box on the presentation of a voucher at either our Manchester or Leeds offices.
